Online does not equal "free"

ESPN owns the rights.

Networks are paying higher and higher fees for rights to sports, and contrary to what every "expert" keeps predicting, those rights fees have not been going down.

Streaming packages are great, and I have the MLB and NHL streaming packages. Both are cheaper than buying those packages from my cable/satellite company, and I would not think of not buying that package with my location and favorite teams. However, that package doesn't include national telecasts or telecasts against my "home" team, for those I have to watch CSN-MA and MASN.

Streaming packages are also great for the family that has similar tastes. If I could get nothing but sports and news, I would be happy. My wife? The package better have USA, Hallmark Channel (kill me now). Getting all of that streaming would cost more than what we are paying now for the cable portion of our bundle.

Eventually, our cable packages will go web based. Our cable boxes will be more like a Roku or AppleTv than a Motorola, but that is still years away. Black and white televisions were still sold well into the 80's, 20 years after the switch over to color. We are now almost 20 years in the switch from analog to digital television, and there are still a lot of analog televisions out there. Cox in Roanoke is in the process of ending its analog transmission right now. Thousands of boxes are going out to customers right now because they don't have digital tuners in their televisions.

The Conference Network model may be heading to the graveyard. but there is still time to make a lot of money on it, so why pass it up.

Plus, if the streaming service becomes the norm, people who want to watch ACC teams will still need to subscribe to that network to get it streaming.
