Don't see how UNC gets in over Notre Dame in that case

At the conclusion of the regular season, Notre Dame was ranked #8 (CFP rankings) - two spots ahead of UNC - even with the Clemson and Stanford losses. If ND had beaten Clemson they would in all probability been ranked #1 in the very poll used to decide participants. UNC could not have vaulted over Notre Dame based on a win over it's only ranked opponent and a two-point loss by the Irish.

The CFP members do not wake up December 1 and begin looking at the teams. CFP appears to be paying more attention to SOS than the AP, otherwise three two-loss teams would not have been ranked over UNC at season's end.

Conference championships are supposed to be used for situations at the margins - in agreement with the 'best team' mantra we heard for years. Absolute statements regarding any one-loss school are too easy to disprove. Head-to-head and who you played will always be more compelling. Conference champs get the benefit of a year-end tough opponent, but if Notre Dame closes out over a top ten USC they get the same bump.

If you do not agree just look at the CFP rankings and the up and down movement arrows. There was virtually no movement after the championship games. Stanford jumped a grand total of one spot over an OSU team that played an incredibly weak schedule. In the CFP, I see pollsters acting like pollsters.
