The other lesser reasons were:
1. Give Penn State 2 close by members to make them bitch less about not having no regional partners like all the other Big 10 schools.

2. The Big 10 wanted to add large public flagship and/or land-grant universities with large alumni populations. They achieved both by adding Maryland's and New Jersey's flagship and land-grant universities.

3. Place more Big 10 members in the ACC territory. The Big 10 (mostly Jim Delany) wasn't happy seeing the ACC add Notre Dame for all sports except football. That put the ACC in the heart of the Big 10. The earlier addition of Pitt placed an ACC school between Penn State and Ohio State. Convincing Maryland to leave the ACC (after 60 years membership) for the Big 10 probably boosted Delany's ego too.
