I can see the argument, but there's a reason for divisions.

At the end of the season, suppose the top three ACC teams Florida State (8-0), North Carolina (7-1), and Clemson (7-1), but through luck of the draw, North Carolina's wins were over Boston College, Duke, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Virginia, NC State, and Syracuse while Clemson beat Boston College, Miami, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Virginia, and NC State.

UNC and Clemson have identical records. Clemson played a much tougher schedule to get there. How do you decide which one plays FSU in the CCG?

At least with divisions, the teams in each division play each other and thus have comparable records. There's no arguing who should be in the CCG when the divisions are clearly laid out and the division champs have comparable schedules.

I could probably spend more time and lay out a better example, but I can't spend but so much time on this right now. The point is with divisions you have two sets of teams with lots of common opponents plus a guaranteed head to head which minimizes the chance of dispute over who wins the division and plays for the championship. There is no real controversy with divisions. The only drawback is how little room there is to play teams in the other division as long as there are designated rivalry games.
