Clemson has played WF 81 times, GT 81 times, and NCSU 84 times

Clemson's oldest rivalry is with that school down the road (113 games).

When you look at historic rivalries, the Atlantic division with GT as a crossover rival makes some sense from Clemson's perspective. They have long histories with WF and NCSU and the FSU game has become a great rivalry (and an ACC ratings bonanza). Louisville generates a good bit of interest given the trajectories of their football program and overall revenue. the next oldest ACC opponents are UNC (57 games), Duke (53 games), and UVa (47 games). The part that does not make sense is having both BC and Syracuse annually (no offense intended to them).

Historic rivalries is one of the reasons why I am starting to gravitate toward the old ACC - new ACC divisional alignment. It acknowledges the history of the two leagues that essentially merged (or one devoured the other). The only permanent crossovers necessary are VT-UVa and FSU-Miami. It will never happen, but what else is there to discuss at this time of the year?

East: BC, Syracuse, Pitt, Louisville, VT, Miami, WF
Atlantic: FSU, GT, Clemson, UNC, NCSU, Duke, UVa
