Continuing from the thread for yesterday, here's VT's Top 20:
Games Team
#1 - 97 Virginia
#2 - 79 VMI
#3 - 63 William & Mary
#4 - 51 West Virginia
- 51 Richmond
#6 - 49 NC State
#7 - 48 Washington & Lee (D3)
#8 - 38 North Carolina
#9 - 37 Wake Forest
#10- 36 Florida State
#11- 33 Miami (Fla)
- 33 Clemson
#13- 31 Maryland
#14- 28 Roanoke (x)
#15- 24 Boston College
- 24 Hampden-Sydney (D3)
#17- 23 Duke
#18- 20 East Carolina
- 20 South Carolina
#20 - 19 George Washington (x)
#20 - 19 Kentucky
And the rest of the ACC teams:
#22 - 17 Syracuse
#25 - 15 Pittsburgh
#27 - 13 Georgia Tech
#35 - 7 Louisville
- 0 Notre Dame
Some observations:
* We have two schools in our Top 20 that have disbanded football - #14 Roanoke (28 games - last played in 1937) and #20 GW (19 games - last played in 1966).
* We have two schools in our Top 20 that are now Division 3 - #7 Washington & Lee (48 games - last played in 1953) and #15 Hampden-Sydney (24 games, last played in 1937)
* We have three schools in our Top 20 that are now FCS schools - #2 VMI (79 games, last in 1984), #3 William & Mary (63 games, last in 2014) and #4 Richmond (51 games, last in 1986).
That makes 7 schools at lower levels or vanished from our Top 20. The rest:
- 9 ACC Schools
- 2 SEC Schools (South Carolina and Kentucky)
- 1 Big XII School (WVU)
- 1 B1G School (Maryland)
- and... ECU!
One could make the case that the majority of our games with South Carolina and Maryland occurred when they were ACC schools... further enhancing our long standing history with ACC schools.
Clearly back in our military school days, we focused on in-state rivalries.
