In 2000, my wife and I rode the Amtrak Crescent fm Charlottesville to ...
... New Orleans for the Championship game that year. We came home via the City of New Orleans to Chicago. Had an all day layover in Chicago so we went to the Natural History Museum, then caught the Cardinal back to Charlottesville.
Probably lucky, but we had no delays on any leg of the trip. We also had sleeping cars on each leg also. Actually we did have a builtin delay. Remember that was the Y2K scare. So Amtrack had every train it operates to shut down about 15 minutes before midnight where ever the train happened to be, even in the middle of no where, which we were. Stayed shut down until some time after midnight to make sure all the computers were still working like they were supposed to.
So we were dead stopped in the middle of no where, sipping champagne watching the New Year come in, in the train's dinning car.
It got to be a little pricey, but I figured a championship game wasn't going to come around too often. VT isn't Alabama.
