Distance is one thing; proximity to a commercial airport is another

Texas is used to difficult travel in the Big 12. A lot of those schools require a fairly substantial drive from the nearest major, commercial airport to campus. Think WVU, Kansas State, Kansas, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State. In older times, Colorado.

It's not as big a deal for football or men's basketball, which will charter to the nearest airfield with an adequate runway. But it is a big deal for volleyball or baseball or other sports.

The upshot is that the campuses of Boston College or Minnesota or Washington may be a really long way from Austin, but it may be a lot harder to get to and from Blacksburg or State College, Pennsylvania even though the distance as the crow flies is considerably shorter.

So you have to look at the conference members as a whole. Most of the Pac 12 is located fairly close to a major airport with lots of flights and pretty good connections. Washington State, the Oregon schools and Colorado may be the exceptions (don't hold me too closely to these suggestions, as I've not been to all of these places). Most of the Big 10 schools are proximate to a major airport, the exceptions probably being Penn State and the Indiana schools. In the ACC, the schools that are relatively difficult for travel are Virginia Tech and Clemson.
