Tech played every ACC school except for UNC....

from the late 1970's to joining the Big East in the early 1990's. Bill Dooley probably had a lot to do with not playing UNC from 1978-1986. Dooley liked playing UVA, Duke, Wake, and Clemson.

From 1978 (Dooley's first season at Tech) -1991, Tech played UVA 14 times, Clemson 8 times, Wake 7 times, Duke and NC State 4 times, and FSU (as ACC member), Georgia Tech, and Maryland one time. Tech played 40 ACC games during that 14 year period. That averages out to 2.86 or 3 ACC football schools per season on Tech's schedule during that time.

Tech played Wake 10 straight seasons from 1976-1985. Played Clemson 9 times from 1977-1990. Tech also played Florida State often from the 1960's through early 1990's. Dooley didn't play FSU while he was head coach at Tech. Tech played 4 ACC teams in 1984 and 1990. The ACC teams that avoided Tech were UNC (likely because of Dooley or UNC AD), Maryland (likely because of recruiting concerns), and Georgia Tech (likely because of playing SEC and Deep South Independent teams on their non-conference schedule?). I know that Tech played Wake, Duke, and UVA every year when I was a student at Tech in the early to mid-1980's.
