When Tech played UNC in the 1997 Gator Bowl

it was the first time the two schools had played each other in football since 1942 IIRC, well over 50 years. Any and all attempts to schedule a game during that time were summarily snubbed by UNC. It even got so bad that after the 1983 season Tech finished 9-2 but did not go to a bowl. The only potential match up was with UNC, which refused to play us, saying Virginia Tech was not good enough caliber to play them. What a prideful bunch! They stomped us in that 1997 Gator Bowl 42-3, but when we got in the ACC we shut them up, winning the first 4 or 5 conference games we played them. The loss finally

Same with basketball. I remember in the late 1960s UNC brought their freshman team with Rusty Clark to Blacksburg to play our freshmen including highly prized Chris Ellis, a very good shooting guard from Tidewater. Back then freshman could not play varsity ball. UNC coming to Backsburg that time, even if it was just freshman, was a huge deal, greatly anticipated.
