You are right. This is all to force the hands of the king maker.
The B12 is complicated. Texas has the majority of the power but OU and KS are not without some sway and certainly have options. I think OU grew tired of the charades several years ago. After Texas A&M, Nebraska, and Mizzou all found a greener pasture OU finally felt vulnerable under the weight of UT's control. What OU has done over the past year is apply pressure to UT (and ultimately ESPN) to pick a side. As long as the idea of super conferences were somewhere off in the future they were happy to stay in the B12, a conference flush with cash. But once the momentum towards further separations between the P5 and G5 schools sped up they began disrupting the process. I am sure it is not as clandestine as I make it sound but it seems clear that OU wants UT to decide to either raise the profile of the B12 or indicate they are moving on after the GOR expire.
My guess is that before the end of the season we will see the B12 either solidify with a new, extended GOR or the teams will start openly courting a new conference. If it is the later I can see the conference dissolving sooner than the GOR's expire by mutual consent. The world we live in today is not ok with letting a process play out. We expect resolution today and change tomorrow. I can't imagine things staying the same for several years while everyone knows the outcome that waits at the end.
