It sound myopic and insincere. This is not personal please don't take

it that way. I know those are harsh words but I am struggling to find better ones. ND has chosen to be the outlier for financial reasons. Maybe 50 years ago it was something else but now it is about the money, period. To dismiss the most powerful driving force in college football as a "consolation prize" is strikingly out of touch with reality. I can appreciate the rationale from a historical and financial standpoint but I have a very hard time believing that educated people could witness year after year the passion and success of conference championships and walk away from that feeling it was just a consolation prize. It is either dishonest or it's brainwashing neither of which are great.

Think through the implications of that stance. Everyone else is completely sold out to win their conference (BYU wishes they had a conference to win.) The fans are engaged at historic numbers in the outcome of the conference championship games. Networks are seeing huge numbers in viewership and paying big money for those rights. There is no evidence to suggest that ND fans are justified in considering it a consolation prize. My sense is that ND fans tell each other that because if they acknowledge the reality of the importance of conference championships then they must abandon something they feel is fundamental to their identity as a ND fan. However, it makes it no less true that conference play is the foundation of college football's success and appeal.

However, ND fans are free to be happy with their arrangement! Love it, enjoy the uniqueness of it even but don't lie to yourselves and say you're not missing out on something. You are clearly missing out on something hugely popular and engaging. Something that every other college football fan appreciates and every other team has as their primary goal for the season. Sure there are 4-6 teams who have the stated goal of winning a national championship but they know that without a conference championship the likelihood of that happening is minuscule. Their first goal is to win the hardware for their conference. This is something ND fans miss out on and should be honest enough to admit that while they hold on to the unique tradition of independence.

Again, this is not about you Terry, I enjoy your comments on the board and like having opposing views. I just can't let that go unchallenged.
