I have never asked anyone to agree with it


I am merely trying to point out the mindset of ND fans.

This isn't something new, either. ND fans have always felt this way.

It isn't financial, either. ND would make more money in a conference.

It may be myopic, but it isn't insincere. It is heartfelt and long standing.

My only purpose of even bringing this up is that I constantly see fans of many other schools scratching their heads trying to figure out Notre Dame and its independent stance out.

Many ND fans are largely indifferent to conference championships and indeed to the very concept of athletic conferences themselves.

For myself, for instance, I enjoyed ND basketball much more when it was an independent in the Seventies and Eighties than as a member of the Big East and ACC.

I liked college football better when there were multiple independent powerhouses instead of big conferences.

As far as the basketball ACC Tournament championship won by ND two seasons ago, it was nice to see but I enjoyed the Elite Eight finish much more than the ACC conference championship.

Nobody is going to move the needle with ND fans about football joining a conference by pointing out how great division and conference championships are.

That is a non-starter. Someone would have to come up with a better reason to join, like a P4 champs only playoff.
