Raising the football cache was what was needed at the time.
Louisville was chosen because they fit that profile best of the choices available when Maryland left, and they didn't hurt the basketball profile. They were a perfect storm athletically. And Bobby Petrino may make them stronger in football than Charlie Strong did.
Plus they are in a market with no professional sports competition. The ACC relaxed the academic standards to take Louisville, but for what the league needed to compete with the other P5, Louisville fit the bill. Sure the scandals are disappointing, but we'll get through those.
Now I still think that the ACC should shore up the northeast with UConn while we can. With a Channel on the way that is a market we can take advantage of. I watched the UVA-UConn game today on streaming. It was produced by SNY. That's the New York sports network, or one of them. Looking at the SNY website, it's UConn with all of the NY professional teams listed. UConn is promoted in NY. The ACC should want that market to promote itself. Syracuse doesn't capture it alone. I'd hate to see the Big XII pick it up instead.
