They're remarkably accurate? At measuring what?

They take a bunch of unreliable information and assign it arbitrary weighting in an arbitrary formula in attempt to define something that can't be definedhow can that possibly be a remarkably accurate measure of anything?

They are a marginally accurate measure of broad relative quality within a fairly large margin of error. Does a Yale degree worth more (and thus - better) than a Virginia Tech degree? Sure. But is a VT degree really better or worse than any other school ranked between, say, 30ish and 100ish? It depends upon where you are, who is doing the judging, what the degree is in, etc.
