Only until the NCAA-FBS says "only conference champions" are allowed ....
in the championship playoffs will Notre Dame even consider parting ways with their football independence. That’s been said a thousand times on here. Many believe that even if the NCAA rules that “only conference champions” are allowed, Notre Dame will still cherish their football independence over conference membership.
I believe that this will hurt Notre Dame’s football recruiting. Any 3 or 4 or 5-star recruit who wants the chance at playing for a national championship will not consider Notre Dame. To those kids, Wake Forest or Vanderbilt will at least have a chance at one, even though a small one. That’s better than no chance.
How will Fighting Irish fans feel 10, 15, or 20 years down the road? Will younger fans feel differently? How will Notre Dame fans feel if a school like Indiana, Purdue, or Northwestern wins a football national championship? Kudos to Notre Dame if they don’t care about national championships, but it won’t have a positive effect on recruiting and fan support once the older generations pass on. Notre dame will likely be playing for pre-New Years bowl games. Heck, even Marshall and Bowling Green can promise that to their football recruits and fans.
