It does matter when the network can have great influence
on a conference's expansion plans when factoring in the impact it could have on its media contracts. Also, the size of the stadium can give some indication the size of a school's fanbase is and how passionate they are about their school's football program which can influence media contracts, bowl tie-ins, and possibly at-large bids. A perfect example is how people perceive Wake. You might even include BC and Duke as having a similar perception as Wake.
Whether you like it or not the media can influence how a conference is perceived by people in a particular sport. Right now the ACC is perceived to be a "basketball conference." If it wants to change how people perceive the conference, then it needs start winning more games, regular season and post season, against the other power conferences on a consistent basis. If the current members can't do it, then it may need to look to add members who can do it. Right now UConn is known as a "basketball school." If UConn wants the power conferences to take it seriously about its football program, then it needs to show it can become the next Boise State or Fresno State (aka giant killer). Also, it needs to show that its fanbase is just as passionate about its football program as it is about its basketball programs.
