I agree, with a caveat

I don't see anybody sniffing around the kids in 6th grade other than AAU coaches trying to recruit them to his team. That said, I think that 8th grade is way too early as well. Raising a humble, balanced kid is next to impossible if there are outside parties telling the kid how incredible they are.

With regards to projecting, I agree with you about 95%. Using mass generalization, I think that there are four different kinds of
kids: The first group, the largest, consists of kids who will never be large enough (due to genetics) to effectively compete beyond the high school level. I personally love these kids because they play their hearts out, and typically are the better ballers because they seem to be a mentally strong group.

The second group are the tweeners. Based upon how they grow and develop as an athlete, they could play in college, or not even make the high school team.

The third group are the really big, massive guys that are just huge compared to their teammates. These guys have the size, but not the quickness, to compete in college or at a high level in high school. Some of them will indeed make it, but most will end up on the football field.

The fourth group, which is by far the smallest group, consists of the "can't miss" players. They are long, smooth, athletic and have at least decent basketball skills. These are the kids that if they just keep their head on straight and work hard, will make it. The only real question is, "will they be a 3 star or a 5 star?" Will they get an offer from Duke or have to settle for VT? (I jest....sort of). My son is a leading member of this group. I will have my hands full over the next 6 yrs trying to keep his head on straight!
