For the hundredth time, B1G wasn't looking for good football programs

They wanted to make it more likely that a B1G program made the playoff, not less likely. They didn't want a program which would compete with Michigan and Ohio State.

What they wanted were homes to bring in $$, kids to play in PSU's sandbox, and solid academic institutions to boot. That it also dug into territory that overlaps what should be ACC media markets was a plus.

The B1G got exactly what it wanted in Rutgers & UMd. Unlike impulsive fans, the people that make these decisions about conference partnership don't look at things in a one game - or even a one or two season - vacuum. Mediocre programs aren't always mediocre. They have cyclical periods of being pretty bad and pretty good. Look at Vandy or Washington State or Wake Forest or Illinois.

UMd and Rutgers have both, in the not so distant past, had some teams that made some folks think they had turned the corner and were on the rise. But they weren't. They just kind of got all pieces together for 2 or 3 seasons. But when that core group that brought about the success leaves, the cycle will repeat itself again.
