I blogged about creating 4 super conferences back in 2011

Here's the gist of it:

I created a scenario that had 4 conferences with 2 divisions of 9 teams each. So 72 schools were in my scenario. Not every school from a Power 5 conference was represented. At the time, Duke still sucked in football. So I left them out. I also left out Wake Forest. Why should schools like them get an automatic entry into the super conference format? Just because they were part of a conference that began in the 50's?

I tried to keep each conference regional. North, East, South and West. By having 9 teams in each division, you get an 8 game division schedule to determine a division champ. There is a conference championship game consisting of the two division champs. The winner of each conference championship moves on to the national semi-finals.

Here's how I broke down the conferences:

North Conference
------------------------
UConn - Division 1
Pitt - Division 1
Syracuse - Division 1
Penn St - Division 1
Boston College - Division 1
Cincinnati - Division 1
Notre Dame - Division 1
West Virginia - Division 1
Ohio St - Division 2
Michigan - Division 2
Michigan St - Division 2
Indiana - Division 2
Purdue - Division 2
Northwestern - Division 2
Illinois - Division 2
Wisconsin - Division 2
Minnesota - Division 2

East Conference
-----------------------
Virginia Tech - Division 3
Virginia - Division 3
Maryland - Division 3
Clemson - Division 3
South Carolina - Division 3
UNC - Division 3
NC State - Division 3
ECU - Division 3
Georgia Tech - Division 3
USF - Division 4
Florida St - Division 4
Miami - Division 4
Tennessee - Division 4
Florida - Division 4
Kentucky - Division 4
Georgia - Division 4
UCF - Division 4
Louisville - Division 4

South Conference
------------------------
Alabama - Division 5
Auburn - Divisiion 5
Ole Miss - Division 5
Miss St - Division 5
LSU - Division 5
Tulane - Division 5
Southern Miss - Division 5
Arkansas - Division 5
Houston - Division 5
TCU - Division 6
Texas - Division 6
Texas Tech - Division 6
Texas A&M - Division 6
Baylor - Division 6
Iowa - Division 6
Iowa St - Division 6
Missouri - Division 6
Nebraska - Division 6

West Conference
-----------------------
Arizona - Division 7
Arizona St - Division 7
Kansas - Division 7
Kansas St - Division 7
Oklahoma - Division 7
Oklahoma St - Division 7
Colorado - Division 7
Utah - Division 7
BYU - Division 7
Washington - Division 8
Washington St - Division 8
Oregon - Division 8
Oregon St - Division 8
Boise St - Division 8
Stanford - Division 8
Cal - Division 8
UCLA - Division 8
USC - Division 8

This would be for football only. No need to drag every other sport into this. Now, I would have to consider putting Memphis, Duke, Navy, and Wake Forest in. Ideally, I'd go through my rankings and find the 72 best teams since 2000.
