This issue is players. The NHL imports them.


The hockey players come from Canada, Europe, and northern states that border Canada. I would see public colleges in the P5 leagues much more interested in sponsoring sports for local talent trained in the local high schools than for imported talent. This is an advantage that Lacrosse will have as it grows in high schools and parents prefer an alternative to football for their kids.

The cost of the arenas is a valid point, but the lack of local high school players is a bigger issue IMO for ice hockey.
