Just back from 90 minutes mingling with homeless street folk in uptown CLT.

Client with extensive new logo signage on the main drag needing documentation. Sunday mornings are pretty quiet and tame.

Like every other city CLT has many homeless. Tough to ignore their plight but so many have faded from rational lives, the world they exist in is imaginary. Somebody showing up with a camera is regarded with suspicion, magical attraction, flat out indifference or fear. I have a sixth sense I've developed over the years working street-level, storefront shoots, so I know who's near, far, safe or not.

"No photos! No photos! No photos!"
"Jesus, God - they don't even know where we are!!"
"I see you, I see you."
"Better be quiet, better be quiet, better be quiet."
"Have an appointment, gotta have an appointment down here."

My back to them and eavesdropping on groups camped around street benches discussing where warm spots are at night, where public bathrooms exist, where good panhandling spots are. Rail thin bird-like men watching me work, swiveling their heads back and forth, mumbling or chanting.

How many degrees of separation are there between any of us and any of them?
