See my response below (starting "I agree rivalries...") because


I talk about it in the third and fourth paragraphs. I should clarify that I am not suggesting we are heading down that path now. I do think the entire education system may be at a crossroads now especially if you view an undergraduate degree as being similar to having a HS diploma in the 1950s or 1960s. Also, I believe there could be some external factors (political and non-political) that could influence society to take a closer look on how the education system is structured in the US. What is still unclear is how the college experience for Millennials, who are currently in their 20s and maybe early 30s, will shape how they view it when their children are starting to look at schools.

For 2016-2017 VT's tuition is $21,416 (in state) and $38,539 (out of state) for the year. In 40 years it is possible a school's tuition could double and maybe even triple from what it is now. I am not sure we can assume that everyone will see the same increase in their paycheck for that same time period.
