The weaknesses of the current system are on full display this weekend and I'm afraid there are no easy answers.

If the 4 team playoff is here to stay (and I hope not) then these conference championship games really need to be reevaluated. They need to be true play-in games or be scrapped all together. No one sitting on the sidelines this weekend in an equitable world should be advancing. OSU should have to be on the field earning their right to be in a 4 team playoff. How do you do that- I dont know- scrap divisions and have a complex formula for breaking ties? Whatever, the current set-up is a sad joke. Yes, it works out well for VT this year but winning the ACC Championship will be severely devalued under the current playoff system.

I'm for rewarding conference champions and giving an outside chance for the very best non-conference winners to advance as at larges. The obvious path in my eyes is an 8 team playoff- with 5 automatics from P5 with play-in championship games, one spot for the highest ranked non P5 school, and two at larges. Committee seeds the schools and first round on home fields and then the rest handle as is. Losers of first rounds are eligible to fill non-playoff bowl slots. Done. Imagine how great this weekend would be and the quarter finals next week under this scenario.
