I think the FCS Playoff has expanded to either 20 or 24 teams

Every team is entitled to give an automatic bid to its champion, but the Ivy League and SWAC have opted not to participate for various reasons. I believe the MEAC is even considering opting out of it. FWIW MEAC's champion (North Carolina Central) opted not to play in the FCS Playoffs so it could play the champion from the SWAC (Grambling State) in the Celebration Bowl (resurrection of the Heritage Bowl). North Carolina A&T did receive a bid to the FCS Playoff (not sure if it was an at-large or the MEAC's automatic bid) and lost to Richmond 39-10 in the first round.
