In 2014 6 teams had 1 loss or less. It was a tie breaker among them.

With 6 teams having 1 loss or less, TCU and Baylor played one less game. So they were 11-1, and the conference champions were 12-1 or 13-0.

We didn't have but 4 teams in 2016 with 1 loss or less. Made it easier for the committee.

I guess teams could take a chance and play weaker out of conference games, but there is still the risk that someone has the same record playing tougher out of conference games.
