It makes perfect sense if you would not impute imaginary rules into the process. You seem to think (just my observation) that the National Championship is a progression: Div Champion, Conf. Champion, Natl. Champion. That is not the case.
The regular season and conference post-season are totally separate from the CFP. When the dust settles on the FB season, the committee is free to select. or not select, teams from any conference, whether thay have earned championships , or not. They have watched more games and more teams by season's end, than all but the most OCD fans. They have discussed the comparative merits of those teams each week. They have publish a list of criteria that they MAY choose to apply in the process. But the end game for them is to subjectively name the four best teams for the playoff.
Is it easier to understand without the interference of phantom rules?
