Interesting area. The road to the basin parallels civil war trench remains which end at earthen fort hoke- brady. The fort was strategically placed high on a hill above a bend in the James and the yacht basin. The river below is no longer the main channel. The union army had crews dig canals across the near by hair pin river bends so their gun boats could bypass river bend forts like Hoke Brady
