Since the FCS Playoffs start Thanksgiving Weekend

the Big XII may have difficulty finding FCS schools willing to schedule regular season games that weekend. The SWAC and MEAC will schedule regular season games for Thanksgiving Weekend. However, those games tend to be "major rivalry" games (at least for the SWAC) since the SWAC's champion doesn't receive an automatic bid to the DI-FCS Playoffs.

Bayou Classic - Grambling State vs. Southern
Turkey Day Classic - Alabama State vs. DII HBCU (Tuskegee is the most common opponent)

This year the MEAC champion (NC Central) opted to play the SWAC champion in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl (reincarnation of the old Heritage Bowl) in lieu of participating in the FCS Playoff. The MEAC did have an at-large team participate in the Playoff. The SWAC can receive an at-large bid (assuming they don't have a regular season game Thanksgiving Weekend).
