We have the same set up as you. VT's "rival" is Boston College. IKR?
The difference it that you guys are guaranteed some intriguing conference matchups every year. You regularly host LSU, Bama, Texas A&M, Auburn, etc... And Mizzu is actually a quality matchup too. On the other hand, VT's big matchup is Miami. We are scheduled to host Clemson, FSU, Louisville every 12 years.
The ACC NEEDS to do away with its divisions and play a 3-5 schedule model. VT should have three rivals it plays each season and then rotate the other 10 teams through every other year. So VT would play FSU every other season and host them every 4 years. You then simply place the top two teams in the ACC Champ. Game.
The ACC proposed this on the same "bill" as the Big12 was asking to play a champ. game with only 10 teams. In an unprecedented move, the Big12's request was approved while the ACC's was not. Dulaney from the B1G specifically cited the ACC's lack of clarity as the reason they rejected it. Swofford wasn't being forthcoming enough with his intentions. They felt Swoff was trying to find a way to get ND into the ACCCG without ND playing a full schedule.
IKR. You can't make this stuff up.
