Connecticut cares about UConn, not New England
That's kind of like saying that the South doesn't care about Clemson. UConn is the regional sports brand for the state of Connecticut without any professional sports competition in the state. Sure they have NFL franchises in border states like Virginia has with the Redskins. The SNY network carries UConn sports to grow its network into the state.
When Randy Edsall had UConn football winning the Big East and going to the Fiesta Bowl, they had turnout to games. That can be done again with the right coaching. And Rentschler Field is designed to be expandable to 60,000.
As we move to streaming distribution of the ACC Network and more pay per view models, a brand like UConn will grow in importance. One like Rutgers will diminish. The exclusive contract with SNY for distribution across that state and high ratings demonstrate the value of that UConn brand. Plus another 31,000 student school in the ACC mix helps with interest from a large alumni population. It's about the same size as Maryland, a little smaller but not by much.
The image of ACC football is carried by those at the top as well as bowl record and out of conference records. The league is right there with the others. We need Clemson and FSU to win, and we need the rest to do well in bowls this year. UConn would not affect this negatively at all.
