Something to consider about the SEC is it considers 2 rivalries to be

"sacred;" the Third Saturday in October (Alabama vs. Tennessee) and the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry (Auburn vs. Georgia). The SEC will make sure both games continue annually either a a protected cross-division game or a division game which could influence what direction the SEC looks to expand. If the SEC looks "east," then it ensures those 2 games will remain protected cross-division games. If the SEC looks "west," then it opens up the door for the SEC to move both AL schools to the East and eliminate the protected cross-division game. Removal of the protected cross-division game would be beneficial if/when the SEC switches to a 9 game conference schedule.
