Now that college is paying...errr giving student-athletes a stipend

it suggests that the gulf between the P5 schools and G5 schools will only widen because P5 schools have more money at their disposal. Most people see the decision to give the P5 conferences 1 slot in the NYD6 as nothing more than appeasing the politicians to keep their noses out of it and less that the G5 conferences deserve to participate in the games. A case could be made that the mindset was establish as a continuation from the Big East (post ACC expansion) receiving an automatic bid during the BCS Era since most people viewed the Big East back then as a G5 conference. Also, consider the rumblings people will have when the Committee selects an unranked (or #20-25 ranking) G5 school for a NYD6 bowl game.

People even complain when the Selection Committee picks too many mid-majors for at-large bids in the NCAA Tournament. People think the mid-majors don't deserve to have too many at-large bids because they don't compete in a power conference. Essentially the G5s have become the mid-major conferences in football. I don't disagree that the G5's decision to have their own playoffs won't have ripple effects in the other sports. I am not sure it is that much of a stretch to say that DI has gotten to the point where the schools have implicitly divided themselves into 2 groups. There are a few sports where the G5s/mid-majors either hold their own or dominate. However, majority of those sports (i.e. ice hockey, water polo, etc) can be considered niche sports and majority of the public could care less about the impact the any decisions made by the G5s could have one them.
