If the power conferences decide to break away before the GoRs

expire, then I would not underestimate the networks unwillingness to sit down at the negotiation table. A loophole the schools have to circumvent the GoR is the dissolving of the conferences. Even though I used conferences to show how the new association/NCAA division level could return to its regional roots, I do think there is a possibility that conferences (in terms of how we define them today) may not exist if the power conference schools decide to adopt a NFL-like business model. Instead of the Big Ten Conference, they could decide to adopt 2 "North Divisions" or a "Central Division" and "Midwest (Great Plains) Division."

If you think about it, the idea of a group of schools breaking away from DI is somewhat radical idea. Once the schools decide to start down that road, then we really don't know where that road could lead the schools or even its final destination. If the schools are determined to dissolve the conferences (and their networks) so they can reform as something else, then the networks may decide to go along with it to keep from potentially being left out in the cold. After all the 4 networks could easily be repackaged into 4 super regional networks to help ease the transition. This radical move could end up being as big (if not bigger) than the AFL-NFL merger and ABA-NBA merger.

If nothing else it would be another sign that collegiate athletics is taking another step towards becoming another pro league or at worse another minor league system.
