Big 10 had a mediocre year despite those 4 or so teams being ranked highly.

Pitt beat Big 10 champion Penn State (but Pitt also beat Clemson). Clemson humiliated Ohio State. FSU held on to beat Michigan. Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Iowa were over rated. Minnesota had a better than average year. Michigan State had a horrible season. The rest of the Big 10 wasn't impressive. Top to bottom, the Big 10 wasn't good. The ACC earned the top football conference ranking for 2016.

It is true that the Big 10 makes a lot of money. The head coaching salaries that Ohio State and Michigan spend are 'National Championship or bust' salaries. Urban Meyer and Jim Harbaugh are expected to bring home national championship trophies with those outrageously high salaries.

I'm a believer that the conference with the best QB's is usually the best conference. The ACC had by far the best crop of starting QB's in the P-5. That's why the ACC did so well. Who knows if the ACC can repeat their success in 2017. There are a lot of highly paid football coaches in the SEC and Big 10 who'll have to do much better than they did in 2016.
