One thing San Diego State may have going against it

is the Pac-12 already has its "West Division" (aka the original Pac-8) if it decides to expand to 16 members. Would the Pac-16 want to have potentially 1 Cali school (aka San Diego State) on an island by being a member of the "East Division" (aka the Expansion 8)? If the Pac-16 decides to keep the north-south alignment, then San Diego State could be a realistic expansion option. However, the north-south alignment may limit the conference's options for expansion members in the North Division even more so than if the conference switched to an east-west alignment.
