The economics of it can be determined with ESPN.
UConn is a known brand that has a lot of televised events that have been metered for ratings. ESPN could determine what UConn is worth using that history. Given all the times they seem to be shown, I'd imagine the answer is pretty good.
The 3-4 million in population seems more than enough for a P5 member. Connecticut has a population of 3.6 million.
By comparison:
Oregon has 4.1 million with 2 P5 members.
Oklahoma has 3.9 million with 2 P5 members.
Iowa has 3.1 million with 2 P5 members.
Utah has 3.0 million with 1 P5 member.
Arkansas has 3.0 million with 1 P5 member.
Mississippi has 3.0 million with 2 P5 members.
Kansas has 2.9 million with 2 P5 members.
Nebraska has 1.9 million with 1 P5 member.
West Virginia has 1.8 million with 1 P5 member.
Given all of this UConn would outpace 13 other P5 schools with its state population compared to theirs. And related to that should be worth more than any of those 13 listed above in terms of market opportunity. Then of course you get what residual value you could pick up in New York City and Boston, which are closely affiliated DMAs for television.
