If all four kids had the same story as far as what weaver told them, the mystical "you can transfer" letter, etc., then why didn't they take further actions (aka litigation or the threat of such) to get their year back. The reasons they didn't include 1) no magical letter ever appeared and 2) Brands behavior would have been uncovered in any litigation and 3) all the kids would have had to testify and make sure all their recollections of the Weaver conversations matched. So for all the bellyaching about how VT did them wrong no actual evidence ever surfaced of VT saying or doing anything wrong. If these kids and parents all had the magic transfer letter don't you think they would have played that card to regain a year of eligibility? Last point: Dan Gable would not have dodged VT or any other team for that matter. Brands is no Dan Gable.
