The majority of schools need to play their rivals to fill up the stadium...

especially in down years.

There are some exceptions like ND and BYU having a national fan base that watches them even though they didn't go to the school, but most schools need in-state and border state rivals to fill their stadium and get TV viewers.(The SEC is built on it) Liberty may be another one of those schools that has that following, but they will have a lot of new challenges as an independent that never existed while being in a conference.

Maybe they are getting ready for the G-5 Football National Championship and like BYU with the P-5, can't get a G-5 to take them...yet?
