Strange finish to the game...

Here is what I got this from the "live stats", so I might be missing something. Nebraska had bases loaded with 1 out in bottom of 8th inning. A ground ball was hit to the VT SS, who made an unassisted putout while the winning run crossed home plate. I assume she tagged the runner going from 2nd to 3rd base. Why wasn't the ball thrown home for an attempted force out instead of getting a put out by the SS?

Maybe the ball was hit in a difficult place, but the ball still should have gone home in virtually any circumstance. The only possible thing I can think of is that the VT SS thought she could have gotten a double play by tag out of the runner headed to third and throw to 2nd for a force out, ending the inning.

Assuming the force out at home is reasonably possible, that is preferable to trying for a double play, especially considering the quick running of 60' bases. A force out at home would have left bases loaded with 2 outs. The SS had a fraction of a second to make a decision.
