Hand calling Epperly and Gardner from his office, while still employed by VT would have been witnessed by Dresser.

I doubt Dresser hates Brands, but I'm sure most of his respect for him was lost during that time. Dresser lobbied to get Brands to VT, so it was a bit personal when he essentially carpetbagged the team.

I do think he wants to beat Brands and issue a smackdown of epic proportions.

That said, he's going to ISU to be near his mom and Humboldt Iowa, a town which he loves and deeply loves him. My guess is Tom Brands never entered his mind during negotiations. He's deeply competitive, but not petty.
