You realize

that that is exactly how most college sports started don't you? Essentially intramural or club sports that started playing other local universities - then maybe within the state and all of a sudden they need a little money from the university to travel be the best team in the state, southeast, wherever. The university analyzes that and determines what is appropriate for the PR gained.

Same goes on today (adding in Title IX issues). While you keep saying that only "dozens" of people watch these sports (I've been at VT soccer games with several thousand) and they don't earn their keep financially (they don't strictly speaking), but I can guarantee you in the big picture (to the people that count) VT looks much better with the sponsored teams we have than it would if we just had FB and BB, with the very marginally increased chance for a natty that little bit of extra money would give us.

"Oh, but we have miniature golf and nap rooms for them!" Please.
