Something to consider when a college/university is considering

what sports to sponsor is what goals it wants to achieve academically. The hyperlink shows all the DI sports sanctioned by the NCAA (left-hand side). If a school wishes to become a top international research school, then chances are that school will want a considerable percentage of its student-body to be international students.

If you subscribe to the philosophy that sports are a good way to increase a school's exposure, then it is reasonable to assume that a school may consider sponsoring sports that are popular on other continents. For example in Europe skiing, ice hockey, and water polo are popular sports. So if a school wants to increase its number of European students, then it may consider sponsoring those sports. FWIW there is a professional water polo league primarily in Hungary and a few other (mostly eastern) European countries.

Another potentially benefit looking at sports from an international recruiting standpoint is it could lead to a sport being added to the sanctioned list. For example rugby union is played professionally and as amateurs in Argentina, Australia, England, France, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa, Wales, Brasil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Fiji, Georgia, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Namibia, Peru, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Samoa, Spain, Tonga, US, Uruguay, and Venezuela. In addition to most of the countries listed above, rugby league is played in Lebanon, Serbia, and Papua New Guinea.
