That's kinda the problem
Once it is known as a "block G" and not a specific team trademark, anyone can use it. It's also why teams have to license them OR defend them. Looking he other way can sorta imply it is in the public domain - at least that's how a lawyer friend explained it to my simple mind.
Like VTBaja's example - it does seem like a low cost license for some applications could be mutually beneficial.
