It was short-sighted and naive, but the philosophy goes something like this....
.....winning a national title requires certain things falling into place that we can't really control, so if we just focus on winning the conference sooner or later our number will come up like it did in 1999.
1999 absolutely corrupted Beamer's understanding of what it takes to win a national title.
In reality, in doesn't take ANYWHERE NEAR the talent and depth to win the BE/ACC as it does to compete at the highest levels. This was borne out in our big stage flops following ACC championships.
At some point, Beamer realized the offense and recruiting were not at championship level, and by that time, it was way a decade too late and trophy box went awa.. Enter Loeffler and company.
