While that may be true I personally think it reflects poorly on the team.


Wreaks of a quitters mentality. You shouldn't enter a competition, whatever it is, if you aren't totally invested in winning that competition. Losers have to make excuses. Whether you weren't as good that day or your heart wasn't into it, it's still an excuse for not winning. If you win, you don't have to make an excuse.
I know a couple of years we were robbed a birth in the NCAA & were seeded #1 yet lost either the 1st or 2nd game. I'm still disappointed up those loses. Yes, it bothered me that we didn't get into the NCAA but it bothered me more that we didn't at least make it to the final four of the NIT those years we were seeded #1.
