Here is why I don't see UNR in the PAC..

1. UNR is not a solid academic choice at #197 in USNWR. UNLV is even lower rated.

2. Reno is not a substantial market. Pop is 237,000.

3. Nevada is basically 2 states..Las Vegas and the rest or at least northern Nevada and southern Nevada. There is a distinct disconnect so adding UNR doesn't necessary bring in Las Vegas which would arguably be the only reason why any conference would have an interest in a Nevada school.

4. The Las Vegas market dwarfs the rest of the state. From what I can tell (I have been to Nevada hundreds of times), the Las Vegas market has a much greater interest in the current PAC schools and BYU than UNR or even UNLV for that matter.

5. PAC 12 Channel was added to Las Vegas cable networks in 2012 so it is already in the market. FWIW, I also know a lot of USCw, UCLA, Stanford, AZ etc fans in Las VegasThe only UNR grad that I know doesn't care at all about college sports. He is a 49ers fan.

6. Travel to Reno basically sucks..The flights are limited compared to Las Vegas or other major cities. Driving there from SF or LV is also arduous. The hotels are weak, the restaurants are weak and other than going to Tahoe, there is not a whole lot to do there. It is not a destination in any sense of the word. I have to fly to Reno on Monday from Orange County, CA. Will take over 4 hours with a layover in Las Vegas on Southwest.

You made the comparison to Utah. Utah is not Harvard but it is much more highly thought of than UNR. Utah is located in Salt Lake City with a metro area exceeding 1.1 million. Getting to SLC is easy and there is quite a bit to do in the vicinity and there is substantial infrastructure. It is also a hub for Delta. The PAC 10 needed to get to 12 for a champ game and stole two very good schools in Colo and Utah. UNR is not even in the same universe in terms of a choice. In sum, the PAC already has itself established in the cable market in Nevada and neither UNR nor Reno, the city, bring anything of interest to the table in my opinion and would only serve to dilute both the athletic revenue stream and academic profile of the PAC.

If UNLV got its academic act together..that could be interesting but again, I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I'm sure there are varying opinions on this, but that is my view.
