New schools need to bring in at least what the other schools in the conference are earning, otherwise they become a drain on the other schools payouts. That's why it's tough to add multiple schools from a single state. The Big-1X adding Maryland and Rutsgers were good "revenue" moves. They just increased their payouts in NJ and Maryland significantly. (Just a guess, but they get something like $1.20 for the BTN from cable subscribers within the Big-1X footprint, and only $0.10 from cable subscribers from states outside of the Big-1X footprint.) That alone paid for those two schools.
