Tech wandered the college landscape for 50+ years

and finally found it's home in the ACC. It's where the majority of big donors wanted us to be from the 1950s to the early 2000s.

We are the closest to the geographic center of every university in the ACC. From a geographic perspective, the ACC is perfect for Tech.

As for the last ACC expansions, I think FSU was far and away the best one with Tech being the EASY 2nd best. But I think the ACC leadership was very short-sighted in their expansion initiatives. With hindsight looking back to the late 80s, the ACC should have invited PSU along with FSU to make a ten-team league like the original Big Ten. PSU had just been burned by the Big East and the ACC missed a huge opportunity there. Note: I think UMCP is still in the ACC today (where they belong) had the ACC added PSU. After that, the ACC should have added Miami and Tech in 2004 to get to a 12-team league with a championship game. And if the ACC had made those moves, we should have added Pitt and WVU to get to 14. Now knowing the ACC was OK with UL's academic ranking, it's logical to think WVU could have been added.

Could you imagine the ACC South with Miami, FSU, GT, CU, NC State, Wake and VT + the ACC North with Duke, UNC, UVa, UMCP, WVU, Pitt and PSU? Tech and UVa could be cross-rivals, but we woudn't face WVU as much. THAT conference would have truly rivaled the B1G and SEC in TV money IMO plus adding hundreds of thousands of passionate State school alumni to the conference.

But, IIWII. and I'm fine with the ACC as our home as long as the conference stays strong with its current 14 full-time members. If we do, there's no reason for us to go anywhere. But if the ACC loses key universities, becomes weaker or should ever fall apart, we need to look toward the B1G if they would have us.

In the meantime, Tech may need to be more innovative than the ACC if we need more cash. The Drive for 25 is a start, but something tells me we'll need more than that if we ever want to win that illusive National Championship in any sport.
