Pitt/BC/Cuse selections were tailored for a network that didn't materialize


If the ACC had started a network at the same time as the B1G, they probably could have foisted their channel into cable bundles in the populous states of NY, PA, and MA and laughed all the way to the bank while no one in those states actually watched their crappy channel.

But the ACC Network proper never materialized, so those three programs just diluted the conference without adding much. The future will be about maximizing direct streaming eyeballs, which means it should have been just 12 with VT, Miami, and L'ville (maybe Pitt could have replaced UMD if they still left in this alternate reality). The ND deal is fine under this paradigm.

Knowing Swofford, he's going to go all-in on ESPN (+Raycom, blech) even as the cable bundling model collapses around him. I actually think ESPN will come out just fine, since they are showing signs of cutting out the cable company middlemen (SlingTV, Playstation/XBox streaming, etc).

But your average YouTube video is better-produced than ESPN's content these days, so the ACC will be ultimately better off selling their content directly. Swofford just isn't the guy to proactively make it happen.
